Isabella; Great that you wanted to sit-down with us. Tell us a little bit about yourself. Who are you?
You’ve played chess with Magnus Carlsen as a young and talented chess-player. How was the experience? Is it true that you did beat him?
Yes, we had a friend in common. They sometimes played speed chess for fun. I was younger, and always just watching the boys play. Once, my friend, Johannes, asked if I wanted to play speed chess with them in teams of two. That was my big moment playing with Magnus. I was like 9 years old. He was 12 I guess and already an Elite player. Did I win? I did not really stand a chance, no…
You’re a front-end developer within our Tech and Platform Development department. Previously you’ve had other non-technical roles in the company. Why are you so keen going into tech?
Tech is one thing, but to code is something different. I get to solve problems and create in solitude. Which is one of my favourite thing to do. Although it did take me a while to have the guts to “go for it”, I’ve wanted to be a developer for quite a while.
Give us some insight in your developer role at Skytech Control and a normal day for you at the office. Are there any links with chess being a developer?
A normal day at the office is started off with a cold matcha-latte and 5 minutes spend on planning the day. Then I get into solving the tasks that my supervisor, Oddy, has given me. This could be everything from small fixes in our code, to creating new features. I believe there are links between chess and coding. You kind of get to use both parts of the brain with both activities- logic and creativity.
What projects are you working with at the moment and how to you collaborate with the rest of the tech team?
Now I work on creating some new tabs with some cool extra info, in one of our apps. I also work on making the UI/UX (even more) visually pleasant than it is. I collaborate with the rest of the team, by having frequent contact with them. I learn a lot from both Oddy and Magdalena, who is more experienced than me, and who gives me feedback on everything I do. We all give each other feedback actually, on everything. We write comments to each other when reviewing the code, and then we also chat about good ideas, bad ideas, issues and possible solutions. We have a common goal of making everything better, all the time, and therefore, no one seems to take anything personally. Which, I think is really cool.
Looking twelve months ahead – tell us about your own ambitions. What kind of projects and expertise are you working with then?
In twelve months I want neewbies to ask me how to do it. I want to be able to suggest and create new modules/features that are useful, and which looks effortless and nice, and I want to work even more with making the actual code really clean, consitent and good. I really want to master that skill of writing really smart, scalable and tidy code.
Skytech Control is a new company with many new people and an ambitious strategy to grow internationally. You sit in the HQ in Oslo. How’s the journey so far?
I enjoy my job. It is exciting be apart of a fast growing company. There are new things happening all the time. – I feel like there is someone new starting every month- yet we are still few enough to notice the difference in each persons contribution.. Which I think is really cool.
Other than work. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? We know you like music….
I do. I recorded my first song professionally, yesterday. That is is a milestone for me 🙂
